AAM All Access Podcast: Celebrating Pharmacists

AAM’s All Access Podcast presents candid, wide-ranging dialogues with leaders and influential figures in health care. Previous episodes have featured Jeff Watson (Apotex), Anthony Principi (board member, Golden State Medical Supply, and former secretary of the Veterans Administration), Avik Roy (Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity) Vinita Gupta (Lupin Ltd.) and industry veteran Bob Billings. We very much look forward to continuing these fascinating, educational dialogues and hope you’ll tune in.

Pharmacists Are Community Servants

In honor of American Pharmacists Month, we spoke to two AAM staff members who are also registered pharmacists. As the podcast emphasizes, this profession is on the frontlines of patient interaction, so their work is crucial when it comes to access and community health. AAM Sciences & Regulatory Affairs Vice President Lisa Parks was part of the industry team that negotiated with the FDA on the Generic Drug User Fee Amendments (GDUFA) and the Biosimilars User Fee Act (BsUFA), and her experience as a pharmacist effectively framed this work.

In my retail days, with the lab coat and having that daily face-to-face interaction with patients, I believe that would probably be the most rewarding, because you really got the sense of the meaning and the value that you bring to patients on a day-to-day basis. When I reflect on that, I really do miss that one-on-one type of engagement.

AAM Director of Policy Monét Stanford identifies and responds to key policy issues affecting our members. As with Lisa, early career experience behind the counter informs her role.

I got into pharmacy because I believe it is a public health arm of the clinical professions. A practicing pharmacist could see up to hundreds of patients per day and still have that individual level of engagement. We're really sharing a lot of clinical knowledge patients on a daily basis.
